Was Mechanization De-Skilling? The Origins of Task-Biased Technical Change
نویسندگان
چکیده
Did nineteenth century technology reduce demand for skilled workers in contrast to modern technology? I obtain direct evidence on human capital investments and the returns to skill by using micro-data on individual weavers and an engineering production function. Weavers learned substantially on the job. While mechanization eliminated some tasks and the associated skills, it increased returns to skill on the remaining tasks. Technical change was task-biased, much as with computer technology. As more tasks were automated, weavers’ human capital increased substantially. Although technology increased the demand for skill like today, weavers’ wages eventually increased and inequality decreased, contrary to current trends. JEL Codes: J24, N31, O33

Technological Revolutions
In skill-biased (de-skilling) technological revolutions learning investments required by new machines are greater (smaller) than those required by preexisting machines. Skill-biased (de-skilling) revolutions trigger reallocations of capital from slow(fast-) to fast(slow-) learning workers, thereby reducing the relative and absolute wages of the former. The model of skill-biased (de-skilling) re...
متن کاملPromoters and Deterrents of Developing Mechanization of Peanut Cultivation In North of Iran
The increasing cost of peanut production is a major concern in Iran. Therefore, developing the mechanization of peanut production is a necessity. In this regard, a three-phase Delphi study was conducted to identify the promoting and deterring factors affecting peanut cultivation mechanization in Guilan Province, the main peanut-producing region in Iran. After preliminary studies, 26 experts wer...
متن کاملThe Price of Polarization: Estimating Task Prices under Routine-Biased Technical Change
The debate about the impact of routine-biased technical change on the labor market revolves around the question whether employment and wages polarized. This paper instead shows that RBTC’s main prediction is that the prices paid for routine tasks should decline compared to abstract and manual tasks. I exploit the sorting of workers into tasks to estimate these price changes under relatively wea...
متن کاملChanges in wheat production technology and the impact on the rural economy in Fars Province
Introduction The increasing population growth and the need for more agricultural products on the one hand, and on the other hand, the limitations of agricultural development are problems that human beings have always tried to solve. Due to the limited resources and inputs of production, it seems that further production growth is possible through advanced technologies. In fact, technology is so...
متن کاملDe-skilling in Handloom Sector A study of the handloom Weavers of Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh in India
This paper examines the effect of capitalist control and technological changes in the handloom industry of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Karl Marx and Harry Braverman’s concept of deskilling is one of the consequences of the capitalistic control and technological changes and it studied theoretically and empirically in the field area. Deskilling is a feature of the labour process theory and it ...
